Kerrville Police Department warns residents of fake toll tag payment text scam

KERRVILLE, Texas — Scammers are always trying to figure out a way to deceive their next victim, and the Kerrville Police Department has issued a “SCAM ALERT” to make the community aware of a text message scam claiming that locals have unpaid tolls.
In a video released Monday, the Kerrville Police Department stated, “These messages may appear to be from legitimate toll authorities and include a link requesting immediate payment. Do NOT click the link or provide any personal or financial information.”
KPD went on to explain that legitimate toll agencies will never ask for payment through unsolicited text messages.
Earlier this month, local banking customers were receiving text messages from scammers claiming that their accounts had been used at department stores as an apparent phishing attempt via text message. Kerr County Federal Credit Union issued a warning on February 5, 2025, to customers telling them to contact them immediately if they receive a text of this nature and to not click to the link.
Regarding the fake toll tag payment text scam, Kerrville Police Department asked residents to stay vigilant and to help them spread the word to protect others from falling victim to this scam.
