Comal County will apply for grant funding through the Railroad Crossing Elimination, or Crossing Safety, Program through the Federal Railroad Administration.

Allocated funds would support the installation of crossing arms and quiet zones at Union Pacific railway intersections on Orion Drive and House Street - the only remaining unprotected crossings in the county.

There have been four accidents at the Orion Drive intersection dating back to 1997, County Engineer Robert Boyd said, including one fatality involving a Naegelin's Bakery delivery driver in July 2025, the Herald-Zeitung previously reported.
