Voters in Carter, Johnston, Love, Marshall and Murray counties will choose their district attorney Tuesday.

The race pits incumbent Melissa Handke - the first woman to serve as district attorney in District 20 - against challenger James Gilmartin, a private attorney.

Handke was appointed in 2023 after serving as a prosecutor and assistant DA for the office since 2015."I know what it takes to do this job because I've lived it. It's not just something you wake up and do. I have a passion to do this and I have a calling to do this. I have the moral fortitude to do what is right whether it's popular or not," Handke said.
