On Tuesday, U.S. Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Jon Ossoff (D-GA) introduced bipartisan legislation that would allow wireless emergency alerts (WEAs) to be delivered via satellite when ground-based communications infrastructure fails during disasters.

The Mystic Alerts Act comes a year after the catastrophic Fourth of July floods in the Texas Hill Country killed 28 people at Camp Mystic in Kerrville and more than 100 others across Central Texas.

Investigators found that damaged cellular infrastructure prevented WEAs from reaching many people in the affected areas."Texas will never forget the July 4th flooding tragedy that devastated Camp Mystic and other communities in Central Texas," Cornyn said.
