SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) - The Sherman City Council approved new fire code regulations for battery energy storage systems as the facilities continue to pop up across Texoma.

The ordinance follows the installation of battery energy storage systems in neighboring counties, to ensure the batteries don't overheat while charging, and are spaced out to prevent a chain reaction if a battery catches fire.

The code also keeps the city's technology standards current."Fire code always follows innovation and technology," said Billy Hartsfield, Sherman Fire Chief.
