Black Maternal Mental Health Week, observed July 19-25, is drawing attention to the mental health challenges Black mothers face during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period, as advocates push for better access to care and support.

According to the March of Dimes, about 1 in 5 new mothers experience a maternal mental health condition.

Among Black women, however, that number rises to about 40%, twice the rate reported among all women.
