SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) - A trend that is ending in tragedy, the viral "Benadryl Challenge" encourages teens to take a dangerous amount of the over-the-counter medication, resulting in fatalities.

They're playing a very dangerous game," said Dr. James Frame, the Chief Medical Officer at Sherman Medical Center. "This is Russian roulette." For some teenagers, this game ends in tragedy. The "Benadryl Challenge" is trending across TikTok where teens ingest excess amounts of the allergy medication for a temporary high."It's an anticholinergic, so it crosses the blood brain barrier, and it causes a high sometime a delirium," said Frame. This online challenge includes side effects like nausea, seizures, and in some cases, death."When the heart starts getting involved, when there's absolutely too much taken in, then the heart starts going into arrythmia this is what causes death," Dr. Frame said. There are warning signs for serious medical issues past the initial high. "And then someone can get confused," said Dr. Greg Hansen, DO, who works in emergency medicine at Texoma Medical Center. "I've heard that's part of the challenge because they see things at high doses, acting abnormal, temperature being high, those are all signs of antihistamine toxicity." "Just like anything else, too much is abusive and in the case of Benadryl it can be dangerous," said Frame. The recommended dosage of Benadryl for adults is a maximum of six pills every 24 hours. This trend encourages participants to take up to 12 in a single sitting."It is very bad for them and could cause them to die," Hansen warned. Texoma doctors urge parents and guardians to keep their teens informed and a have a watchful eye."I have two kids at home, and when I was told I was going to do this interview I am now more concerned, and am going to go home and speak to them to make sure that they are not involved in this kind of challenge," Hansen said. "TikTok challenges are notoriously promoted by people who want attention, and those people want followers and views, it is unsafe, unhealthy, and bad for everyone," stated Hansen.
