ODESSA, Texas (KOSA) - Backpacks are packed and school supply lists are checked, but state officials say Texas drivers have some homework of their own to do before classes start this month.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has launched its annual "Be Safe. Drive Smart" campaign, and this year's message comes with an urgent warning: school zone accidents are on the rise.
According to TxDOT, newly released state data shows traffic crashes in Texas school zones spiked by 12% between 2024 and 2025.
