LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - State Sen. Charles Perry said Texas does not need to find new water sources, but instead needs to clean the water it already has."It's 10,000 barrels of oil and gas water that was once being injected, being converted to a beneficial use," Perry said.

Produced water and desalinationPerry described that water as "produced water," a byproduct of drilling that can be run through a desalination plant and turned into something useable."So that is the future of water supply and beneficial use for agriculture in the Permian, because that's where that supply exists," Perry said.

Perry said produced water desalination is one piece of the solution."The other one is marine desal, where it makes sense, and brackish desal as our backstop," Perry said.
