Texas District 73 Rep. Carrie Isaac is speaking out against the city of New Braunfels' decision to place New Braunfels Fire Lieutenant John Weige on administrative leave as they investigate his social media activity.
Weige was placed on leave effective Oct. 10 after Facebook posts, in which he made derogatory statements towards Muslims and immigrants, were brought to the city's attention, The Herald-Zeitung previously reported.
City Manager Robert Camareno stated that Weige's posts "do not reflect the values or positions of the New Braunfels Fire Department or the City of New Braunfels," and that "the social media activity will be reviewed in accordance with applicable internal policies and standards governing employee conduct and social media use." Isaac is calling on Weige's First Amendment protections, and stated that the posts were made on a private account not affiliated with the city or the fire department.
