MARLIN, Texas (KWTX) - A new memorial in downtown Marlin is bringing history into view, honoring 435 freed men, women and children who traveled from South Carolina to Falls County in 1867 in search of a new life after the Civil War.

The memorial, located in front of the Falls County Courthouse, lists the names of those who made the journey - a public recognition that descendants say is both emotional and overdue.

For members of the Shaw family, seeing their ancestors' names carved in stone was exciting and emotional.
