A former Laredo middle school built in 1963 was designed as a fallout shelter capable of housing 2,000 people as part of America's Cold War civil defense strategy.

LAREDO, Tex.
(KGNS) - A Laredo middle school that students pass through each day once played a role in America's Cold War civil defense strategy.
The former United High School, built in 1963, was designed to serve as a fallout shelter capable of holding up to 2,000 people in the event of a nuclear attack.
