If you grew up in Fredericksburg, stories about Admiral Chester W. Nimitz's grandfather, Captain Charles Nimitz, were nearly impossible to escape.

Even more so if, like my family, your grandmother had cleaned rooms at the old Nimitz Hotel between 1893 and 1900.

Chester's mother had remarried and moved to Kerrville in 1890, so whether my grandmother ever met the future admiral was never clear.
