BURLESON COUNTY, Texas (KBTX) - Twelve New World screwworm cases have been confirmed in the U.S., 11 in Texas livestock and one in a dog in New Mexico.
For almost two years, as the infestations began to move north through Mexico, U.S. government and industry officials have been working on a strategy to contain and eradicate the screwworms."If you're a social media follower, you'll see it seems to be a little bit of a panic situation, but as ranchers and people who do it for a living, we understand that there is a plan in place," John Malazzo, a Burleson County rancher, said."Your susceptible group is going to be the calves that you castrate, dehorn and your newborn calves that have fresh navels," Malazzo said.
"There are treatment products there that once you get that calf born and dried off, then there's some ways to protect it."The first case detected in Texas was in a newborn calf."I talked to the owner yesterday, and that calf is totally healthy and recovered and has been turned back out," Malazzo said.
