FAIRFIELD, Texas (KWTX) - A man was shot and killed by a Freestone County Sheriff's deputy following a high-speed chase Saturday night in Fairfield, Sheriff Jeremy Shipley said.

A deputy attempted to make a traffic stop around 7:33 p.m., but the driver fled, leading on a 26-minute vehicle pursuit with speeds exceeding 125 mph, according to a sheriff's office statement.

The chase ended on the side of Farm to Market Road 488, where a physical altercation broke out between the deputy and the driver.
