Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has confirmed that Fort Phantom Hill Lake, near Abilene, is now fully "infested" with zebra mussels - meaning an established, reproducing population of the invasive species is present in the lake.
The waterbody was first designated "positive" in September 2025 after a single adult zebra mussel was discovered near a dock, along with two microscopic larvae found in plankton samples.
Plankton samples collected in fall 2025 showed no signs of larvae, consistent with an early-stage population at the time.
