While Comal Independent School District administration says the district is in a strong position concerning the compliance of its bus fleet with a new seatbelt law, they share the concerns of many other districts across the state about the funding needed to bring its remaining buses into compliance.
Senate Bill 546 requires that school districts ensure all their buses are equipped with three-point seatbelts by Sept. 1, 2029.
Director of Transportation Jessica Fischer updated CISD trustees on the district's current fleet and recommendation for future compliance during a regular meeting on May 28. CISD has 173 yellow school buses and 10 multifunction activity buses that already meet the three-point requirement, she said.
