Fifteen years ago, Leticia De Leon noticed backpacks filled with food sitting in the nurse's office at her kids' elementary school.

She inquired about the backpacks and was told they were for kids who needed help with meals over the weekend.

Then she began to wonder what happens over summer break, and the nurse said she did not know.
