Uvalde school board members can legally continue holding four-year terms after a federal judge found the district's election system does not violate the constitutional rights of Mexican-American voters.
Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District trustee Jaclyn Gonzales launched the term length debate when she halted the board's May 19, 2025, meeting on a point of order, claiming four members' terms had expired under the 1982 Mireles consent decree.
The decree stems from a lawsuit the U.S. Department of Justice filed against UCISD in 1977. The government asserted Uvalde's at-large school board election system weakened the voting power of Mexican-Americans.
