With Election Day approaching, the U.S. Department of Justice plans to send election monitors to select Harris County polling locations.

The announcement has raised questions among Houston-area residents about why federal officials will be there and whether voters will have to interact with them.

The Harris County Clerk's Office says the monitors will observe compliance with federal voting-rights laws, including protections against discrimination.
