TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - Dozens of dogs rescued from a Smith County home are getting a second chance after deputies found 38 animals living in what investigators described as extremely unsanitary conditions and in need of medical care.

The Smith County Sheriff's Office said the investigation began after deputies accused 57-year-old Susan Garrett of stealing two dogs from a home May 18 while working as a delivery driver.

Investigators went to Garrett's home to recover the dogs and reported a strong smell of feces and urine, according to a sheriff's office release.
