A 14-year-old student has been charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting near Westfield High School that claimed the life of a 15-year-old classmate Tuesday afternoon, authorities said Wednesday.

The shooting occurred just before 3 p.m. near a sidewalk adjacent to Westfield High School and a Spring Independent School District administration building located on Ella Boulevard. The teen suspect was taken into custody Wednesday and subsequently charged with murder, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

The victim, identified as Royce Witchet, was rushed to a hospital following the shooting but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Witchet's mother, Rhonda Churchwell, described her son as a compassionate teenager who enjoyed sports and music and maintained close bonds with his siblings.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez indicated that some type of conflict between Witchet and the suspect preceded the shooting. The suspect, whose name has not been released due to his age, is believed to be enrolled in Spring ISD, the same district as the victim. Authorities noted that relatively few students were present on campus at the time of the incident.

Investigators have not disclosed specific details regarding the nature of the dispute or whether the two teens had any prior connection. The sheriff's office has deployed additional deputies to Westfield High School in the aftermath of the shooting, while district officials announced they would provide counseling and support services to students on campus.
