Texas Governor Greg Abbott has escalated his challenge to religious facilities at two major airports, sending a formal request to the U.S. Department of Justice this week to investigate ablution stations designed for Muslim travelers. The Republican leader sent the letter to federal Attorney General Todd Blanche, seeking action against ritual washing areas located at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Abbott also raised objections to a prayer facility at the Houston location, citing the presence of religious materials including copies of the Quran, prayer mats, prayer beads and a turbah—a small piece of natural earth used in Islamic prayer rituals.

In his correspondence, Abbott argued that airport operators have improperly allocated public funds toward establishing spaces exclusively for Muslim passengers. "These government-owned airports have used - and continue to use - funds charged to the public to finance, maintain, advertise, and operate Muslim-only spaces on property that should be open and accessible to all citizens," Abbott wrote to Blanche. He compared the facilities to segregation-era racial discrimination, stating that airports cannot legally maintain spaces restricted by faith any more than they could maintain race-based facilities. Abbott previously had directed the matter to the federal Department of Transportation and threatened to redirect state financial support from the facilities.

The governor's position prompted Dallas-Fort Worth officials to withdraw an expansion proposal that would have installed two additional ablution stations in the pre-security section of its international terminal. Historical records indicate that ablution facilities had been operational at the airport since at least 2019, following renovations to an interfaith prayer chapel. Abbott's intervention effectively halted the airport's plans to increase accommodation for Muslim travelers.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, the state's chapter, denounced Abbott's position as a "manufactured controversy" and dismissed it as an "anti-Muslim political stunt." CAIR representatives countered that the proposed washing stations would serve all airport visitors regardless of religious affiliation, comparing them to interfaith prayer rooms already present throughout American airports. The organization drew a contrast to Abbott's education policies, noting the governor's administration has backed Bible readings in public schools and the placement of Ten Commandments displays in classrooms. Abbott had designated CAIR as a terrorist organization in the previous year, a designation the group has challenged through pending litigation.

Ablution represents a ritualistic cleansing practice found across multiple religious traditions. For Muslims, the practice involves washing specific body parts as part of spiritual preparation before prayer.
