Child in 'extremely critical' condition after being hit by truck while riding scooter

BENNINGTON, Neb. [KTRE]
A child scooter rider sustained life-threatening injuries Tuesday afternoon after colliding with a pickup truck in Bennington, Nebraska, authorities said.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of 179th Street and Island Circle. According to investigators, a group of three children was moving northbound on 179th Street when one child ventured into the roadway and was struck by a pickup truck traveling in a westbound direction.
The 11-year-old victim was transported to Children's Nebraska following the collision. Medical personnel at the hospital reported the child's condition as extremely critical.
Community members at the scene responded immediately to the emergency, administering emergency aid before paramedics and other first responders could arrive and assume care of the injured child.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities have not released additional details about potential contributing factors or whether any citations or charges may result from their ongoing review.
