Registered voters in Lubbock City Council District 4 began casting ballots Monday in a competitive runoff election that will determine which candidate advances to the general election Aug. 1. The early voting period commenced with extended hours at multiple locations throughout the city, continuing through July 28.

The contest features two prominent local figures: Tim Green, a homebuilder and former firefighter who positioned himself as a growth-oriented candidate, and Gary Boren, a former city council member. In the initial round of voting held in June, Green secured approximately 47 percent of the vote while Boren captured 38 percent, necessitating the runoff between the top two finishers.

The Lubbock County Elections Office at 1308 Crickets Avenue served as the primary voting location, maintaining standard hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the early voting window, with the exception of Sunday, July 26, when operations shifted to noon through 6 p.m. The office extended its hours on both the first and final days of early voting, remaining open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on July 20 and July 28.

Additional voting opportunities existed at multiple satellite locations. United Super Markets locations at 82nd and Boston Avenue and at 130th and Indiana Avenue, as well as Market Street locations at 50th and Indiana Avenue and 98th and Quaker Avenue, all offered early voting during standard business hours with the same adjusted schedules for weekend and final-day operations. A voting station in the Citizens Tower lobby at 1314 Avenue K provided weekday voting options, though it remained closed on weekends.

Green emphasized his qualifications regarding development and economic expansion during the campaign, highlighting his background in construction and municipal service. Voters seeking additional election information were directed to the county's official voting website, which also provided materials in Spanish for non-English speakers.
