The Northeast Texas Public Health District confirmed five cases of cyclospora infection across a seven-county region, with health officials emphasizing the cases appear unrelated and do not constitute an outbreak at this time.
According to the district, Smith County has documented two confirmed cases, Gregg County has two, and Henderson County has one. The Northeast Texas Public Health District, which serves Smith, Gregg, Wood, Rains, Van Zandt, Henderson and Anderson counties, made the announcement as the region enters the parasitic infection's peak season.
Spokesman Terrence Ates said the isolated nature of the cases means they do not meet the criteria for classification as an outbreak. "We are highly encouraging all East Texas residents to minimize and eliminate their possible risk of exposure by making sure to thoroughly wash fresh fruits and vegetables before cooking, eating, or processing them, and to ensure to thoroughly wash their hands after using the bathroom," Ates said.
Cyclospora causes gastrointestinal distress in infected individuals, producing symptoms including nausea, vomiting, severe diarrhea, abdominal bloating and cramping. Health officials noted that infections documented this year have resulted in particularly acute watery diarrhea. The parasitic infection is transmitted through improper sanitation and hygiene practices.
The infection typically follows seasonal patterns in Texas, with transmission risk highest between May 1 and Aug. 31. Public health officials recommend residents remain vigilant about food safety and personal hygiene during these months to reduce their risk of contracting the illness.
