InvestigateTV+ Weekend: Lithium-ion battery failures

(InvestigateTV) - They power our devices every day but when lithium-ion batteries fail the damage can be fast, violent and life-changing. [KTRE]
# ARTICLE BODY
Lithium-ion batteries have become ubiquitous in modern consumer devices, powering everything from mobile phones and computers to electric bicycles and cordless tools. Yet the disposal of these energy sources presents significant challenges that have emerged as a mounting public safety concern across the nation.
When these batteries reach the end of their usable life or become damaged or defective, the lack of accessible recycling infrastructure creates a dangerous gap between consumer need and available options. Federal records document a steady uptick in fires ignited by lithium-ion batteries nationwide, with landfills and recycling facilities increasingly grappling with intense blazes sparked by improperly discarded units. Many communities lack adequately equipped disposal facilities, leaving residents with few alternatives—many of which carry substantial costs—even among those aware of the hazards involved.
An investigation uncovered the real-world consequences of this infrastructure shortage. One consumer experienced a lithium-ion power bank explode in his pocket mere days after the device may have been subject to a product recall, raising troubling questions about whether buyers remain vulnerable to dangerous equipment despite their efforts to act responsibly. Researchers and fire service professionals point to the scarcity of proper disposal access as a key factor elevating ignition risks, while emphasizing the need for technological innovations to manage the growing threat.
Addressing the disposal challenge, an expanding number of state legislatures have enacted measures designed to place responsibility for safe battery management on manufacturers rather than individual consumers.
Meanwhile, a separate investigation by national outlets and ProPublica examined how more than 100 industrial facilities nationwide have received exemptions from stricter Clean Air Act emission requirements. Some facilities, including a major copper mining operation in Arizona and numerous chemical manufacturing plants spread across the country, obtained two-year exemptions through claims invoking "national security"—one of limited pathways available to the administration for granting relief from environmental compliance mandates.
