New World Screwworm Threat Brings Disaster Declaration to Kerr County
A local state of disaster declaration was signed by Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly on Monday, June 15, in response to the growing threat posed by the New World screwworm. The declaration, which took effect immediately, aims to mobilize the county's emergency management resources to combat the infestation.
According to officials, six infested zones have been identified across the region, including Zone 03 in neighboring Gillespie County and parts of Kerr County [Kerr County Lead]. The Texas Animal Health Commission has confirmed the presence of the New World screwworm in these areas. "We need to take swift action to protect our residents and prevent further spread of this pest," said Judge Kelly.
The disaster declaration will remain in place for seven days, after which it will be brought before the Kerr County Commissioners Court for consideration of an extension [Kerr County Lead]. During this time, emergency management officials will coordinate with local authorities to implement measures to mitigate the threat posed by the New World screwworm.
