Hundreds gathered Saturday in Houston to remember a man killed during an encounter with federal immigration agents, as elected officials and community organizers called for accountability in the case.

The memorial service for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo took place at the Service Employees International Union Texas office on Harrisburg Boulevard. Among those attending were U.S. Representatives Al Green, Christian Menefee, Sylvia Garcia and Lizzie Fletcher, alongside other state and local figures and labor union representatives.

The death occurred after an incident involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents earlier in the week. The circumstances surrounding the encounter remain under investigation.

In Laredo, political figures weighed in on the incident. U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar characterized Salgado Araujo's death as a tragedy and announced his intention to seek a comprehensive investigation into what happened. Mayor Victor Trevino acknowledged the difficult nature of immigration enforcement work but argued that the intensity of force used in this case went beyond what the circumstances warranted.

The incident sparked divided reactions among residents in the border community. Laredo resident Graciela Rubio expressed skepticism about official accounts and called for community support for Salgado Araujo's family. "But we need to have support. We need to support the families in Houston," Rubio said.

Others in the area offered contrasting perspectives. Resident Jose Lopez defended law enforcement's actions and said the public must show greater respect for those in uniform. "Respect for law enforcement has gone down significantly," Lopez said.

As investigators continued examining the details of the deadly encounter, the case highlighted broader tensions between immigration enforcement operations and community concerns about the use of force.
