Beat the Heat at Lubbock's Libraries This Summer
As temperatures soar in West Texas, the City of Lubbock is taking steps to keep residents cool and comfortable. The city has partnered with Reliant to open "Beat the Heat" cooling centers at four public libraries, providing a respite from the heat for families and individuals alike. In addition to these cooling centers, the local libraries are also hosting a range of summer reading programs and activities, including Wednesday afternoon matinee movies as part of Summer Reading 2026. These events are designed to encourage families to read together and enjoy some quality time indoors.
The city council has also approved a contract to address the growing issue of birds on Glenna Goodacre Boulevard in North Overton. Tom's Tree Place will be taking steps to reduce the number of birds in the area, as well as clean up after them. Meanwhile, residents can beat the heat at any of the four public libraries, which are open as cooling centers today and throughout the summer.
