TEXAS — Financial experts are urging parents to establish a budgeting strategy before purchasing a cellphone for their teenagers, emphasizing that the decision involves far more than selecting a device.

Cherry Dale, who oversees financial education initiatives at Virginia Credit Union, stressed that parents must ensure adolescents grasp the full financial scope of phone ownership. The initial purchase represents only a fraction of the total expense, according to Dale. She recommended that households clarify expectations about cost-sharing arrangements before entering a retail environment.

Allowing teenagers to shoulder a portion of the equipment expense can prove educationally valuable, Dale noted. Young people who contribute funds through summer employment, household responsibilities or part-time work develop a stronger appreciation for the genuine worth of consumer goods. This hands-on financial participation can build stronger money management skills as children mature, she explained.

Establishing clear boundaries extends beyond household finances, Dale cautioned. Schools maintain varying policies regarding device usage, with some institutions prohibiting phones entirely while others permit them under specific circumstances. Parents should familiarize their children with institutional guidelines relevant to their educational setting.

The complete cost picture extends beyond the initial purchase price. Monthly service fees, protective equipment and damage coverage all factor into the genuine expense of device ownership. Creating a written family agreement that outlines behavioral expectations and financial responsibilities can help families avoid conflict as they navigate this transition, Dale suggested. Such documentation clarifies obligations and promotes more productive conversations about technology and fiscal responsibility within households.
