Heroism in the Texas Hill Country to be Honored at ESPY Awards
The 2026 ESPY Awards will pay tribute to a young hero who risked everything to save lives during the devastating floods that hit the Texas Hill Country last year. U.S. Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer Scott Ruskan, just 26 years old at the time, executed multiple high-risk rescues on his first-ever mission, saving an astonishing 165 children from the raging waters of Camp Yarrow.
Ruskan's bravery and selflessness have earned him a place among the nation's heroes, and he will receive the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the ESPY Awards. The award is given to individuals who embody the spirit of sportsmanship and service, much like Army Ranger Pat Tillman, who gave up his NFL career to serve his country.
As the Texas Hill Country continues to recover from the floods that claimed 137 lives, including 37 children, leaders are working tirelessly to rebuild and restore homes for those affected. A community update on housing recovery efforts is scheduled for Tuesday, with officials promising a comprehensive overview of their progress at a news conference in Kerrville.
