Tips to turn a staycation into a real vacation without blowing your budget

(InvestigateTV) - A new WalletHub survey finds high gas prices are reshaping summer travel for a majority of Americans, with 59 percent saying transportation costs have affected their plans and 51 percent planning to spend less than last year. [KTRE]
Surging fuel costs are forcing millions of Americans to rethink their summer vacation strategies, according to research by the financial website WalletHub. The survey revealed that transportation expenses have influenced the travel decisions of nearly three-fifths of respondents, while approximately half indicated they would allocate fewer resources to leisure activities compared to the previous year.
Rather than abandoning vacation plans entirely, many travelers are turning to local alternatives that eliminate major trip expenditures. Industry analysts note that the primary costs associated with traditional vacations—accommodations, fuel and transportation, and restaurant meals—can be substantially reduced by exploring attractions within one's own region.
John Kiernan, who serves as managing editor for WalletHub, emphasized the importance of approaching a staycation with the psychological framework of a genuine vacation. "You want to treat it like a vacation kind of mentally," Kiernan explained, noting that successfully executing a local getaway requires intentional planning rather than defaulting to ordinary daily routines. He suggested that travelers disable work notifications and emails during their break to create genuine psychological distance from their professional responsibilities.
Kiernan recommended that vacationers explore their immediate surroundings with fresh perspective, treating familiar neighborhoods as if discovering them for the first time. This approach opens access to complimentary community events and lesser-known destinations that residents often overlook. The strategy allows families to enjoy meaningful leisure time without requiring substantial financial outlays.
Staycations need not involve zero spending to deliver savings, Kiernan cautioned. Strategic budget allocation—such as designating funds for a single significant activity like a theme park visit or one night's hotel stay—allows families to enjoy special experiences while maintaining financial discipline. He advised that families conduct research on available local attractions before the summer season concludes to identify entertainment options that align with their financial parameters.
