County officials across the Texas Hill Country are scheduled to brief the public Friday on their emergency response to severe weather that inundated the region this week, leaving at least one person dead.
Kerr County leaders plan to conduct a news conference at approximately 1 p.m. Friday to update residents on recovery efforts. The briefing follows confirmation Thursday by the Kerr County Sheriff's Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety that a man perished in the flooding. His remains were discovered near Center Point.
During a Thursday news conference, Gov. Greg Abbott disclosed that the victim was inside a recreational vehicle when he was swept away by floodwaters. Kerrville Police Chief Jerel Haley identified the Kerr County Sheriff's Office as the agency leading the investigation into the man's death. Haley expressed the emotional toll the incident has taken on the community, noting the area is still recovering from significant flooding that occurred a year prior.
"Our community grieves, and we grieve hard. We're still reeling from what happened a year ago. Those are not easily forgotten memories," Haley said. "To have this happen again so suddenly is literally quite devastating for a lot of us as first responders, as employees of the City of Kerrville and as members of this community."
In neighboring Kendall County, officials convened Thursday morning at approximately 11:30 a.m. near the Kendall County Road and Bridge Building, situated along the Interstate 10 service road and County Road 290, to discuss that county's flood response efforts.
The National Weather Service had issued a Flash Flood Warning covering portions of Kendall County, including the communities of Boerne and Comfort, with the alert remaining in effect until 1 p.m. Thursday.
