A 34-year-old Somerset man died Tuesday morning in what authorities describe as a workplace mishap involving a trench excavation crew in New Braunfels.

Comal County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to the 600 block of Gold Coast Drive shortly before 11:30 a.m. after receiving reports of an accident at the work site. Upon arrival, law enforcement officers found Cornelio Martinez unresponsive at the location where the crew was conducting trenching operations.

Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff's office. The 34-year-old had been working alongside the crew members when the incident occurred, authorities said.

The Comal County Sheriff's Office has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Martinez's death. Investigators are working to determine how the accident happened and what specific factors contributed to the fatal outcome.

Details about the nature of the trenching work or the equipment involved remain unclear as the investigation continues. The sheriff's office has not yet released additional information regarding the incident or identified any other individuals present at the time of the accident.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the investigation remained ongoing, with law enforcement officials reviewing the scene and interviewing potential witnesses who may have information about what transpired at the worksite.
