During the U.S.-Mexico war 180 years ago, hundreds of U.S. Army regulars who were natives of Ireland deserted and joined the other side, in part due to brutal punishment and other forms of mistreatment, including anti-immigrant prejudice, they'd suffered in the U.S. Army of the mid-19th century.
