A developing system in the Gulf has a 90% chance of becoming a tropical depression or named tropical storm within the next couple of days, forecasters from the National Hurricane Center said on Oct. 6.

As the storm develops and strengthens, all outcomes remain on the table as of the morning of Oct. 6: "The storm's potential ranges anywhere from a sloppy, disorganized system to a major hurricane," said meteorologist Matt Lanza in his Substack, The Eyewall.
