Pope Leo XIV had surgery Tuesday at Agostino Gemelli University Policlinic in northwest Rome to remove a nodule that was determined to be pulmonary adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer.

The Vatican said surgeons removed the cancerous growth, along with the lower lobe of his right lung.

In an update on Wednesday morning, the Vatican said that the pontiff had a "quiet night." Pulmonary adenocarcinoma accounts for about 40% of all lung cancer cases.
