TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - Pretrial proceedings have begun in Smith County for Jamaurea Brittion, a man facing the death penalty for the killing of Deja Hood in 2023.

A portion of the proceedings focused on an upcoming election for punishment filing, a document submitted by the defense in which the defendant chooses to be sentenced by the judge or jury if found guilty at trial.

Prosecutors also said they wanted to formally pursue their motion seeking a psychiatric and psychological examination of the defendant, a measure that might be needed to rebut opinions from potential mental health experts from the defense.
