Police Officer Michael De Hoyos received the American Heart Association's Heart Saver Hero Award at Thursday's City Council meeting after saving a patient suffering a cardiac episode.

"This has been a long time coming," said Scott Burgess, assistant chief of emergency medical services for Bexar County Emergency Services District No. 4. "It's not that often that we get to say, twice in one month, we had someone whose life was extremely impacted, changed and saved." Burgess said he received an email from the American Heart Association seeking to recognize someone whose commitment to helping others reflects the very best of public service.

According to Burgess, De Hoyos responded to a cardiac arrest call at a residence on Nov. 22, 2025.
