COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - With the first day of school days away for some students, a College Station Independent School District (CSISD) nurse is urging families to start adjusting their children's sleep schedules now.

Cassidy Flater, a district nurse for CSISD, said summer routines have pushed many kids' sleep cycles off track and the return to early mornings will be a real adjustment."They've been staying up late, sleeping in late," Flater said.

"And so going back to school, they're gonna be back on a routine where they have to be up, you know, 6:30, 7 o'clock in the morning, and then they're gonna be having to be awake all day - can't go and take that nap."Start early, shift graduallyFlater recommends starting the transition at least a week before school begins, moving bedtime earlier in small increments rather than all at once."If they were going to bed at 10:30, maybe knock it down to 10 o'clock and then maybe go to 9:45, kind of do some increments where it's not, 'okay, now you have to go to bed at 7,'" she said.
