The Brownwood Lady Lions cross country team made history Friday at the UIL Class 4A Cross Country State Championships at Old Settlers Park, turning in a program-best sixth-place performance in the state meet.

The Lady Lions were fueled by freshman Alexus Gutierrez's school record time of 11:45. 6 in 17th place, along with freshman Jordan Johnson in a 25th-place time of 11. 57. 0, freshman Lynlee Richmon in a 66th-place time of 12:44. 7, freshman Ellie Mirahmadi-Zoghi in an 83rd-place time of 12:54. 1, junior Rebekkah Delgado in an 87th-place time of 12:56. 0, freshman Valeria Valadez Trejo in a 112th-place time of 13:14. 6, and freshman Paisley Hill in a 127th-place time of 13:32.0. "Going in our goal was to beat what we did two years ago, which was finish seventh, and we were able to do that, and Alexus broke out school record overall so that was exciting," said Brownwood cross country head coach Chelsy Lipsey.

"Our goal was to be in the top five honestly, which we didn't quite get, but everyone is coming back and six of them are freshmen. Now that we know what this is about, we'll have even bigger goals next year of trying to finish on the medal stand." The Lady Lions generated 186 points, which trailed only state champion Canyon (44), runner-up Salado (74), Randall (80), Decatur (135) and Huffman Hargrave (162).
