(KGNS) - A member of the Webb County Youth Council said only two out of every 100 registered early voters cast a ballot in May 2026 and is pushing a plan to change that.

Proposal calls for countywide representation16-year-old Jose Luis Orozco wants Webb County commissioners to create a youth council that represents the entire county, not just Laredo.

His proposal calls for 25 student members - five from each precinct - in a council that would mirror Commissioners Court with its own judge, commissioners and treasurer."Young people often experience, their first experience with government is through the TV or on their phones. They don't actually go to the city council meetings, they don't go to the commissioner's courts, they don't go to the sessions of Congress. So this opportunity kind of lets them be part of that process and lets them learn from it from a first-hand perspective," Orozco said.
