BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- The former Brazoria County Sheriff's Office deputy Kevin Tippit, who is charged in the death of 18-year-old John Mendoza Jr., is claiming that he did not know his gun had fired following the shooting on June 1, 2026.

Guy Womack, Tippit's attorney, spoke with ABC13 reporter Daniela Hurtado on Thursday to discuss the matter.

Womack explained that Tippit was the only deputy on duty within the district that evening when he noticed a driver fishtail in front of him while he was parked in front of a school.
