TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - The Smith County Sheriff's Office is looking for more ways to get reimbursement for housing federal inmates.

At Tuesday's commissioner's court meeting, Chief Deputy Gary Pinkerton told the court a six-million-dollar federal grant would allow them to upgrade 96 empty beds at the county's low-risk jail.

The project would turn those beds into a "medium-risk" facility, allowing them to house federal inmates.
