More than half of the mental health calls made to 911 in San Antonio last year were handled by regular patrol officers or other police units instead of the city's specialized mental health teams, data reviewed by KSAT Investigates shows.

City officials revealed during a January presentation to the Public Safety Committee that 54% of mental health calls were handled by patrol officers or another unit outside the San Antonio Police Department's Mental Health Unit or SA-CORE.

City officials have said that when 911 call takers identify a mental health component to a call, they first look to dispatch SA-CORE - a program that pairs police officers, paramedics and licensed clinicians - and then SAPD's Mental Health Unit.
