Gov. Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration for Zavala and Uvalde counties on Friday, two days after federal officials confirmed the first New World screwworm case in Texas in more than two years.

The declaration directs all available state resources to the response and prioritizes them for the two South Texas counties.

Abbott also said he is making state personnel - including staff from Texas' university systems - available to speed the movement of sterile flies into the state and to accelerate construction of a federal sterile screwworm production facility in Edinburg.
