Gov. Greg Abbott unveiled plans Thursday for SpaceX to develop a major semiconductor manufacturing complex in Grimes County, marking one of the largest industrial projects in recent Texas history. The facility, known as Terafab, will require an initial investment exceeding $16.8 billion and is expected to generate 3,000 employment opportunities across the region.

The sprawling plant will occupy 100 million square feet and consolidate semiconductor production operations under a single facility. The integrated approach will combine logic chip fabrication, memory production, and advanced packaging capabilities—a manufacturing model designed to streamline production of artificial intelligence chips needed for both SpaceX's space operations and terrestrial applications. Elon Musk, SpaceX's chief executive, characterized the undertaking as "the most epic chip-building effort" the company has pursued, emphasizing its goal of restoring advanced manufacturing capabilities to American soil while meeting the company's expanding technological demands.

The Grimes County site sits approximately 40 miles northwest of downtown Houston and immediately east of College Station. State officials provided substantial incentives to support the project's development. Texas allocated a $30 million grant through the Texas Enterprise Fund, a mechanism designed to attract major corporate projects to the state. The project also qualified for economic advantages under the state's Texas Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation program, established by legislators in 2023 to recruit large-scale manufacturing ventures.

The semiconductor facility represents SpaceX's expanding industrial footprint across Texas. The company already operates its principal global headquarters and Starbase rocket launch facilities near Brownsville, along with a Starlink communications satellite manufacturing operation in Bastrop.

Local officials characterized the announcement as transformative for the rural county. Grimes County Judge Joe Fauth III described the development as a "generational change" for the area's economy. School districts serving the region have begun negotiating tax incentive arrangements with the project developers. The facility is expected to recruit engineers, technical specialists, and manufacturing operations staff for long-term employment.
