Harris County deputy shooting suspect captured after manhunt

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A deputy was hurt, and a possible suspect fled in a patrol car after a shooting in east Harris County, according to the sheriff's office. [ABC13 Eyewitness News]

A Harris County deputy was shot and wounded Wednesday evening during a response to a domestic disturbance, prompting an intensive manhunt that ended Thursday morning with the arrest of a wanted fugitive.

The incident unfolded in the 1100 block of Bayou Drive near Interstate 10 East when the deputy arrived to address a family dispute. During the encounter, gunfire erupted and the officer sustained injuries to the lower portion of his body. He was transported to a hospital where medical personnel listed his condition as fair.

Chase Layne Patin, the suspect in connection with the shooting, was apprehended after authorities received a tip from a civilian who noticed a dog behaving unusually near a storage shed on a residential property. Law enforcement officers, acting on information gathered by the U.S. Marshals Service and Harris County Precinct 3 deputies, responded to the location and made contact with Patin, who emerged from his concealment without further incident.

According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, a patrol vehicle was taken from the scene and later discovered abandoned near Dale Dell and Interstate 10. A Blue Alert was issued early Thursday morning to alert the public to the fugitive's status.

Crime Stoppers of Houston indicated that Patin had been the subject of an active search since mid-July after failing to comply with electronic monitoring requirements imposed as a condition of his bond. He faced charges related to unlawful firearm possession and carried a prior criminal history encompassing four felony convictions.

The identity of the injured deputy has not been disclosed by authorities. Sheriff Gonzalez urged anyone with additional information regarding the incident to contact the Harris County Sheriff's Office at 713-221-6000.
