Houston-area shoppers who have noticed higher prices at the meat counter could be watching a new development in the federal investigation into the cost of beef.

The U.S. Department of Justice has expanded its antitrust investigation into beef prices to include eight major retailers, including Walmart, Costco and Kroger, all of which have stores throughout the Houston area.

The DOJ sent letters to the retailers seeking information related to recent increases in retail beef prices.
